one small step

this is an amazing series from storycorps and i think it’s especially relevant now, in the wake of the 2020 election. i have … lots of thoughts. i haven’t yet been able to put them into words yet, but this is part of it.

we have a very deep divide in this country, fueled by a lot of anger, resentment, and fear, and everybody on every side of the divide feels that they are 100% in the right. and the thing is? there is a fragment of truth to that. we can all benefit from listening to one another.

yes, i have my views that some of us really need to listen a lot more than others, but that’s my bias. we all have our own bias. i won’t back down from the need for social justice in this country — and there must be a way forward without anger and violence.

maybe i’m wrong. the civil rights battle wasn’t “won” by peaceful demonstration, despite what white media wants us to believe. peaceful demonstration was met with violence. it always is. so there may truly not be a non-violent way forward, as much as that goes against my ideals. but i’m also beginning to believe that this isn’t a battle that can only be won on a single front, and one of those paths to justice must be nonviolence and understanding and healing.

the link below should be a playlist — the first video is just the introduction, but all of the videos are worth watching.
